German wines enjoy expansion
German wines enjoy record expansion in Ontario
TORONTO (July 28, 2010) – Wines of Germany announces today that 13 new German wines will be available at LCBO locations by October in what is the most extensive release of German wines in the past decade. The growth in Ontario shelf space falls on the heels of solid national sales – over 475,000 cases in 2009 - and is driven by a growing appreciation throughout the world for Germany’s main grape varieties: Riesling in the white category and Pinot Noir in the red.
“Most people recognize Germany as the world’s leader in the production of quality Riesling, but we’re also a solid third in production of Pinot Noir,” said Ted Kalaboukis, Director, Wines of Germany (Canada). “The addition of 13 new German wines at the LCBO is a direct result of growing demand for our quality wine from both the occasional wine lover and the avid connoisseur.”
Most of the new releases will be available at LCBO locations by the end of August and will include 11 German Rieslings, a Pinot Noir and a Silvaner. Nine of the 13 new products will be sold at VINTAGES.
"The VINTAGES customer has come to appreciate and enjoy the many diverse styles of Riesling,” said Kate Mallett-Thomas, Director, VINTAGES Sales and Purchasing. “From very dry to deliciously sweet, Rieslings go well with a wide range of foods and occasions. Our upcoming release will include a collection of German wines that will allow them to re-discover and explore the many wonderful wines of Germany."
To support the launch of these new releases, Wines of Germany and LCBO will offer tasting events in more than 20 LCBO locations across Ontario during August and September. Wine lovers will have the opportunity to sample the new German wines with a variety of distinctive food matches.
